The City of Portland's Police Bureau is seeking Public Safety Support Specialists.

The Public Safety Support Specialist for the Portland Police Bureau is responsible for: providing support to sworn police officers in non-emergency, non-priority situations; assisting sworn personnel in community outreach with the public; providing a visible, community-based police support function to enhance the Portland Police Bureau's (PPB) service to the public.  


Responsibilities include: responding to non-emergency calls for service that do not require police authority; assisting sworn officers with community engagement; assisting sworn officers with non-emergency calls; providing referral services to the public.  This employee may also be assigned to work on special projects within the division.

Incumbents in this position may also be required to respond after regular working hours and on weekends.

To Qualify

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at date of hire.  The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  1. Skill in reading and understanding laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and procedures related to police support functions.
  2. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and handle stressful situations firmly, tactfully, and with respect for individual rights.
  3. Ability to rapidly assess critical situations involving the public, and remain calm in emergencies or threatening situations.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and with citizens from varied racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and utilize City-specific technology and general office software.
  6. Ability to learn legal criminal investigation techniques, evidence collection, report writing, crash investigation, First Aid/CPR, interviewing techniques, and conflict de-escalation.
Applicants must also possess:
  • A valid State Driver's License and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to successfully pass an in-depth background investigation.
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-hire physical exam relevant to the position.
  • Ability to successfully pass a psychological evaluation relevant to the position.
  • Ability to successfully pass a physical ability and agility evaluation relevant to the position.
  • Ability to successfully pass a drug screening.
  • Ability to successfully pass a 6-week post-hire basic training program (subject to change based upon recommendation of the Portland Police Bureau Training Division).
  • Ability to obtain LEDS certification within three months of hire.

The Recruitment Process

    • The City currently pays the employee's share of the retirement contribution.
    • Employees who are OPSRP members are vested after five years of contributions or when they reach age 65 (age 60 for police and fire.) 
  • Option to contribute a portion of your earnings on a pre-tax basis to the City's Deferred Compensation Program.
Paid Leave
  • 80 hours of vacation each year initially. This accrual will increase over time. 
  • Sick leave typically accrues at the rate of 104 hours each year
  • 10 paid holidays each year
  • three personal days accrue each year
Family Medical Leave

In accordance with federal and state law, and the City policy for family medical leave, the City grants family and medical leave to eligible employees for certain family and medical related reasons.
